Fair play. I haven't studied American History but I did hear along the way that it was a near run thing that German could have been the most widely spoken language in the early days.

Re: Sarah Palin on immigrants: 'When you're here, let's speak American'
Mentor - the United States has never had an “official language”—English, German or any other and doesn't have one nowadays. Nor was there any such vote in 1776. Congressional debate and a vote concerning German probably did take place in 1795 but dealt with translating US laws into German and the proposal to publish laws in languages other than English was rejected a few months later.

It is likely that the myth of German as the official language of the US first arose in the 1930s, but it dates back to the country's earliest history and another similar story. Most scholars suspect that the US legend originated as a German-American Bund propaganda move aimed at giving German added weight via the spurious claim that it had very nearly become America's official language. What is so wrong with what she say's? American is a form of English with different pronunciations and spelling. It was decided by constitution just after the AWOI that English would be used rather than German. I make her right.

Did the interviewer correct her?
Did anyone correct her?

Always surprises me that with all their money the American right can't find any candidate who at least resembles an intelligent human being.

Seems to me nothing much changes in the US regardless of who is elected except that the president is allowed one flagship policy per term that will be then be held up as his legacy.

Probably time for the US to have a woman and get all the diversity stuff out of the way. If only they could find a disabled hispanic lesbian........

I don't know about that. Americans hated Obamacare too but reelected Obama easily.

I suspect that boring old Hillary will be elected, but a Trump vs Sanders election would be fantastic to watch.

Re: Sarah Palin on immigrants: 'When you're here, let's speak American'

Got no Idea who will win the election to be honest. its true that the Republican Party has its issues but the Democratic candidates are pretty weak too. Hilary I'm full of shit Clinton is in trouble and Bernie wet blanket Sanders is considered a socialist an ugly word in the states. There's a chance that VP Biden could run but he's portrayed as a bit of a retard, which means he'll probably win.

One word of note, the Americans hate this Iran Nuke deal, could end up being the death of the Democrats no matter who they pick to run especially if Obama signs it in with executive order.

Most Americans don't trust Iran and see Obama as a weak negotiator.

Re: Sarah Palin on immigrants: 'When you're here, let's speak American'
a large part of the base has bought into the all government is evil nonsense and Trump has been able to play into that. He's even playing well with the religious types.

But they eventually settle on the most likely to win candidate. McCain wasn't especially socially conservative and Romney was a Mormon.

It's their early flirtation with the freaks.

For all their idiocy, the Republicans have a major plus in that Hillary is a bad candidate and a poor politician,

I don't think the GOP will win whoever they choose as their candidate.

To be selected as the candidate you have to be both fiscally and socially conservative, with the latter preferably driven by strong religious beliefs.

That's what the GOP base wants - a religious conservative. Like Romney and Ryan last time around, and McCain/Palin before that.

But America won't elect the religious right ever again. The demography has changed and isn't going to change back.

The GOP would walk the election if they could stomach selecting a ticket that was fiscally conservative but socially liberal - but they can't bring themselves to do it.

They are in the same quandary as Labour - they are going to select someone who says what they want to hear but has no chance of winning.

Re: Sarah Palin on immigrants: 'When you're here, let's speak American'
It's her lack of self awareness that's the most amising given her crimes against the English language.

Trump won't get the GOP nomination, if he did he is likely to repulse more voters in a presidential than attract them. It'll be like plain in VP ticket - he will energize the freaks of the conservative base while alienating everyone else.

Entertainingly he will likely cost them any chance they had of winning as he will kill any chance of the GOP security any more of the Latino vote.
